This loop stitches together two of Skaftafell’s greatest hits: the basalt-column showstopper Svartifoss and the cliff-edge viewpoint Sjónarnípa over the Skaftafellsjökull glacier. Expect big scenery with surprisingly efficient effort. The signed route is well marked and generally easy to follow, with a few steeper or narrower stretches. Total distance is about 4.6 miles (7–7.5 km) for the full S6 loop, with roughly 880 feet (≈270 m) of ascent. Most hikers take 2–3 hours depending on photo stops.
Start at the Skaftafell Visitor Centre; the first ~250 meters pass through the campground before turning right and uphill. Follow signs toward Svartifoss and ignore the first sign pointing to Sjónarnípa—visit the Svartifoss viewpoint first, then pick up the signed S6 across the plateau toward Sjónarnípa. After soaking in the glacier panorama, return via Austurbrekkur to complete the loop back to the Visitor Centre.
Short on time? There’s a more direct route to Sjónarnípa on trail S5 from the Visitor Centre. It’s steeper in spots but well marked; many hikers choose S6 to combine the waterfall and the overlook in one outing.
From Sjónarnípa, you’re eye-level with Skaftafellsjökull’s crevassed tongue and ringed by peaks like Kristínartindar, Hrútfjallstindar, and Öræfajökull. The Svartifoss section showcases striking hexagonal basalt columns. In spring and early summer, the hills carry rich birdlife, and with luck you might even spot reindeer on the move.
Overall this is an easy-to-moderate hike: well signed, with a few steeper or narrower sections and some exposure near the cliff edge. It can be muddy or icy in winter and spring, and boardwalks/wooden steps may be slick when wet. Expect wind on the ridge and at the viewpoint.
Summer delivers the friendliest conditions and the greenest slopes. Shoulder seasons can still be great, but snow and mud add effort—bring traction if it’s icy. For photos, early or late light flatters both the glacier and the falls; crowds are thickest around Svartifoss midday and thin beyond as you approach Sjónarnípa.
Turn off the Ring Road (Route 1) onto Road 998 to reach Skaftafell. Park at the Visitor Centre; facilities and trail info are on site. Trails are open year-round as conditions allow.
Give the cliff edge a healthy buffer, especially in winter when cornices can form. Weather changes fast—carry layers, rain protection, and water, and respect any seasonal closures for nesting birds.
Park at the Skaftafell Visitor Centre; the loop starts beside the visitor area.
Stay well back from the cliff edge at Sjónarnípa and avoid any winter cornices. Expect wind exposure, muddy or icy sections in winter/spring, and slippery wooden steps when wet.
