Guide
From the rim and lakeshore you’ll look straight onto the crevassed glacier tongue and its floating ice. The scene is constantly changing as the glacier retreats and reshapes—no two visits look exactly alike. Linger and you may hear cracks or see small calving along the ice front.
Enjoy the viewpoints, but don’t step onto the glacier without a trained guide—hidden crevasses and unstable ice are real hazards. Keep a respectful distance from the ice edge and any calving fronts. Expect wind, rain, and slick, muddy moraine underfoot; sturdy footwear and proper layers make this stop a lot more pleasant.
Compared to other glacier stops nearby, this one often feels more intimate: a shorter walk, fewer barriers, and excellent sightlines right into the ice.
You’re here for geology, not wildlife—the ice front is largely barren. Broader regional wildlife viewing is better elsewhere in the park.
