About Svartifoss

Svartifoss (Black Falls) is a 20 m cascade pouring into a bowl of jet-black, hexagonal basalt columns. It’s not the biggest waterfall, but those columns make it one of the most distinctive sights in the park—and a favorite for photographers and geology nerds alike. The setting feels like a natural cathedral.

Those polygonal columns formed as a thick lava flow cooled and cracked into geometric shapes. The look is so iconic it inspired elements of Icelandic architecture, including Reykjavík’s Hallgrímskirkja. Up close, the textures and patterns are the whole show—don’t judge it from afar.

Tips for visiting Svartifoss

Start early or come late afternoon to dodge the biggest crowds.
Wear grippy shoes—the last stretch to the viewpoint can be slick.
Pause at Hundafoss and Magnúsarfoss; use the footbridge and platform for the best angles.
Pay for parking at Skaftafell before you set off; there are no services at the falls.

Logistics

There’s no entrance fee for the hike, but expect paid parking at Skaftafell. Services (toilets, info, campground) are by the visitor centre; there are none at the falls. Dress in layers and wear grippy footwear—conditions can be wet or icy, especially in winter.

You’ll start from the Skaftafell Visitor Centre and follow a well-marked path about 1.5 km each way. Expect a steady but gentle climb on the way out and an easier return. Plan 60–90 minutes round-trip depending on photo stops. There are benches to catch your breath, sections of grating and wooden steps, and the final ~200 m can be slick and rocky. En route, you’ll pass Hundafoss and Magnúsarfoss before crossing a footbridge to the final viewing platform with the classic, head-on view.
