Skaftafellsjökull Glacier

The first half is paved and the latter half is comfortable gravel. Numbered interpretation stops explain glacial retreat, glacier gardens, kettle holes, moraines, dikes, and the changing glacier foreland. The route ends close to the glacier, with views toward the ice margin and proglacial landscape. A signed junction roughly 300 m before the end offers an alternate return; follow the current signs and keep the primary route's barriers and warning notices in view.

Start next to Skaftafell Visitor Centre (Skaftafellsstofa) and follow S1/Jökulslóð signs. Use the main Skaftafell parking area and check current park arrangements on arrival; visitor-centre facilities are available, but there are no trail facilities along the route. Expect wind and exposed conditions near the glacier, and rougher moraine gravel toward the end. Stay behind barriers and warning signs because calving ice, sudden waves, unstable ground, and changing glacier margins are hazardous. Never step onto glacier ice without a certified guide. Winter footing can be icy, so carry suitable traction and weather layers.
