Locator Lake Trail

This is an out-and-back from Kabetogama Lake to Locator Lake: about 4 miles round trip, with roughly 1.9 miles each way. Allow 2 to 5 hours; around three and a half hours is a sensible plan for most hikers, before the boat ride. Repeated ridge climbs and rough footing make the short mileage feel strenuous. Go if you want a quiet backcountry walk and can plan water access at both ends.

The narrow path climbs and drops over several steep ridges, then twists through forest and wetlands. Expect exposed roots, rocks, stairs and boardwalks. Rocky rises open views across woods, marsh and water, though the individual view openings and boardwalks aren't marked as a reliable mile-by-mile itinerary. A few visitors report mud and bothersome flies; those conditions can vary.

The trail ends at a dock on the south shore, beside a picnic area, vault toilet and canoe rental. The lake is a good place to pause before turning back. For a photo, include the shoreline plants and tree line with the water; a frame of open water alone loses the setting.

Routes onward toward War Club, Quill and Loiten lakes are a separate canoe trip with short portages, not more hiking. Private watercraft can't be carried over portages into the backcountry lakes; arrange any canoe rental and campsite separately.

The Locator Trailhead is on the north shore of Kabetogama Lake, across the water from the visitor center. There is no road parking at the start, so arrange the boat ride or paddle there and back before setting out. The hike itself needs no fee or reservation. The old Cranberry Creek Portage from Rainy Lake is permanently closed; it isn't an alternate approach.

Pets aren't allowed. Vault toilets are available at both ends, and the lake end has the picnic area and canoe rental. No food service or drinking water is listed along the route, so bring what you need for several hours. If you hike before dawn or after dusk, carry a dependable light. The trail is used in spring, summer and fall; winter use isn't maintained.
