Overview

Crandell Mountain Campground was Waterton’s classic rustic option: a big, forested campground tucked beneath Crandell Mountain along the Red Rock Parkway. Campers loved the quieter, more natural vibe compared to the busier Townsite area, plus darker skies for stargazing.

Current Status

As of the latest park updates, the campground remains closed until further notice due to extensive damage from the 2017 Kenow Wildfire. Parks Canada has been working on infrastructure, but no reopening date has been announced. Respect all area closures—violations can carry steep fines.

What Made It Special

Setting: Subalpine forest, mountain views, and a creek-side feel that felt removed from town.
Trail Access: A convenient launch point for Red Rock Parkway hikes, including the popular Crandell Lake route.
Atmosphere: A more rustic, nature-forward experience that regulars preferred over the in-town bustle.

Wildlife

Deer and elk are common in the area, along with a wide range of birds. Black bears and grizzlies do pass through—strict food storage and clean camps are non-negotiable here.

Amenities (When Operational)

Crandell offered lots of unserviced sites (previously 129), washrooms, a camp kitchen/shelter, and a sewage disposal/dump facility. There were no showers, no electrical hookups, and no reservations—sites were first-come, first-served.

Alternatives While Closed

Head for Townsite Campground or Belly River Campground, both listed by Parks Canada as current options. Always check the park’s camping page and bulletins for the latest status before you drive out.

Best Time to Visit

Right now, it’s closed. If it reopens, expect front-country campgrounds to be busiest in July–August; aim for weekdays or shoulder season, and arrive early if sites are first-come, first-served. Early and late light works well for photography around the valley.
