Olowalu Beach

Olowalu Beach is a long, narrow strip of sand below Olowalu Valley on Honoapiʻilani Highway. The shallow coral reef just offshore is the draw, not a broad stretch of sand. I’d make this a short snorkel stop if you want reef time and are happy with a simple roadside beach; choose another shore if you need a wide, serviced beach.

The practical arrival is the informal ocean-side pull-off around Mile Marker 14. The map pin marks the beach area, not a confirmed parking entrance. Camp Olowalu is a separate reservation campground, so don’t use its gate as public beach access. The shore sits immediately beside the highway, and the sandy strip is narrow. Don’t drive onto loose sand. Public restroom and shower reports conflict, so plan as if none are available at the beach.

The reef’s coral channels are shallow, with deeper water farther out. At very low tide, coral can sit close to or above the surface; aim for higher water if you’re snorkeling, and stay off the coral. Visibility and fish vary, so treat a good snorkel as a possibility rather than a promise.

The reef extends across 939 acres from Olowalu toward Pāpalaua. It supports the largest known manta ray population in the United States, and coral larvae from this reef help replenish reefs around Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi and West Maui. It was named a Mission Blue Hope Spot in 2017. A 2015 marine heatwave caused significant coral bleaching, and runoff and shoreline erosion remain pressures on the reef.

From the sand, include the waterline in front and Olowalu Valley with the West Maui mountains beyond. That gives the picture both the shallow reef and the setting that makes this beach distinct. The nearby landing and campground are separate places, not a shortcut to this view.
