Old Faithful Visitor Education Center

The Old Faithful Visitor Education Center is an indoor interpretive hub in Upper Geyser Basin, close to Old Faithful Geyser. Check the predictions for Old Faithful and five other geysers, then use the exhibits to make sense of what you see outside: geysers, hot springs, mudpots, fumaroles, life in extreme thermal environments, and the volcano beneath Yellowstone. It’s a useful stop between boardwalk walks or while you wait for the next eruption.

The center’s tall glass front faces Old Faithful, so you can watch an eruption indoors. The windows can get crowded at busy times, with visitors sometimes blocking one another’s view; treat this as a sheltered option, not a guaranteed front-row seat. For a more open-air view, head to the geyser’s boardwalk viewing area.

The Young Scientist room has a model geyser, hands-on exhibits, and space for classes and other organized groups. The wider exhibit hall explores thermal features, life in extreme environments, Yellowstone’s volcano, and ongoing research. The building was designed to reduce its impact on the natural surroundings and is LEED-certified.

The Museum of Thermal Activity stood here from 1929 until it was razed and replaced by a visitor center in 1971. It grew from superintendent Horace Albright’s 1928 proposal for small local museums that would make visits educational as well as recreational; Rockefeller foundation funding and guidance from the American Association of Museums helped establish four in Yellowstone.

Find the center on Geyser View Avenue by the west parking lot. Upper Geyser Basin can be approached from two directions, so check the park map as you route in. The center has public restrooms, ranger assistance, park information, seasonal evening programs, and a Yellowstone Forever bookstore for books and souvenirs. Food service is not listed at the center, so plan a separate meal stop in the Old Faithful area. Hours vary by season; check before you go.
