Overview

A compact, conversation-forward cultural stop in the heart of Old Faithful, this center brings artists, knowledge keepers, and presenters from the park’s 27 associated Tribes into direct dialogue with visitors. It’s about living culture—stories, songs, craft, foodways—not glass cases.

What You’ll Experience

Expect rotating weekly presenters offering demos and informal chats: beadwork, quillwork, ledger art, bow making, dressmaking, plant knowledge, traditional foods, songs, and storytelling. The atmosphere is welcoming and personal—linger, ask questions, and you’ll get far more than a quick look.

History

The center lives inside the restored Haynes Photo Shop, Yellowstone’s first photography store and studio dating to 1884. Reopened in 2012 after restoration, the building’s photo-history roots add layers to today’s Indigenous-led programming.

Planning Your Visit

• Summer-only and typically open daily, with the 2025 season running May 26–October 18.
• Presenters are generally on site around 9 am–5 pm (with a midday break). Schedules change weekly, so check the lineup to catch topics that excite you.
• There aren’t restrooms inside; use facilities at the neighboring Old Faithful Lodge or Old Faithful Visitor Education Center.

Best Time to Visit

Go early or late in the day to miss peak Old Faithful crowds and have more time to talk with presenters. If you’re timing Old Faithful eruptions, drop in before or after—don’t rush the conversations.

Make a mini-campus loop: Old Faithful eruptions, a short boardwalk stroll in Upper Geyser Basin, the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center’s geothermal exhibits, and this center for human history and living traditions.

Wildlife & Etiquette

Bison frequently move through the Old Faithful area. Keep distance on boardwalks and roads, and never approach wildlife. Inside the center, be curious and respectful—some cultural items or songs may have guidelines; follow the presenter’s lead.
