Great Divide Arch is a timber gateway over the former Highway 1A at Kicking Horse Pass, marking the Continental Divide at the Yoho–Banff boundary. The arch is a brief stop, but getting there is the outing: follow the paved route 2.7 km from the Lake O’Hara parking lot. Go on foot or by bicycle; this is not a drive-up stop. It’s a worthwhile extra destination if you want the old road’s history or a paved ride to the pass.

Frame the former highwayThe arch spans the old pavement, with a former roadside rest stop beside it.

The arch spans the old pavement, with a former roadside rest stop beside it. Look through the timber frame along the road for the classic photo, then take the short path to the creek and its marker. The appeal is this small piece of highway history and the sense of crossing a continental boundary, rather than a big overlook or a long list of things to do.

Watch the water divideA short path from the rest stop reaches Divide Creek and the nearby Parting of the Waters…

A short path from the rest stop reaches Divide Creek and the nearby Parting of the Waters marker. Here the creek divides into branches draining opposite sides of the Continental Divide. It’s a small, easy-to-miss detail, but it makes the name feel literal: water leaving the same little stream heads in different directions.
