Hiking Great Divide Trail to Lake Louise

A long, easy-grade crossingGreat Divide Trail to Lake Louise is a 9.8 km (6.

Great Divide Trail to Lake Louise is a 9.8 km (6.1 mi) one-way walk on the former Highway 1A, from Lake O’Hara parking to Lake Louise Drive. It’s an old paved road rather than a narrow mountain track: much of it runs through conifer forest, with a rough surface and gentle rises. Allow about 3–4 hours on foot one way; the listed two-hour time is for biking. Without a pickup at Lake Louise, you’ll retrace the route for a nearly 20 km day. This is a good choice if you want to cross the Continental Divide on the historic road, but the arch is the main landmark and the rest is a long corridor walk.

The Divide archThe timber arch marking the Continental Divide is about 2.7 km from Lake O’Hara parking.

The timber arch marking the Continental Divide is about 2.7 km from Lake O’Hara parking. The old road continues another 7.1 km from there to Lake Louise Drive, crossing from Yoho into Banff National Park. The arch over the pavement is the route’s signature stop; get the carved beam and road in the same frame to show how the old highway passed beneath it.

Access and shared useThis is a point-to-point route, not a loop.
