Niles Meadow Trail

Niles Meadow is a hard 19.8 km out-and-back from the Wapta Lake Picnic Area, following the forest path to Sherbrooke Lake before climbing the upper valley past cascades and Niles Amphitheatre to an open meadow below Mount Niles. Allow 6.5 to 9 hours; the GPS-based route record reports about 1,040 m of cumulative ascent. The lower walk to Sherbrooke Lake is a shorter option at 4.3 km each way, usually about three hours return.

Use the upper Wapta Lake Picnic Area lot on the north side of the Trans-Canada Highway. The entrance comes just after West Louise Lodge and is easy to miss. Access is westbound only; if you are travelling east, continue about 2 km to the Lake O’Hara Road turn-around, then return west. Toilets are at the upper lot.

The lower trail climbs steadily through forest, with two signed junctions and short boardwalks across boggy ground. It reaches the south end of Sherbrooke Lake, then stays close to the shore. Low wet sections, mud and small creeklets make this stretch slower than the gentle approach; there are only a few easy spots to get down to the water.

Beyond the far end of the lake, the route gets rougher and wetter. It follows a stream through old forest, crosses several creeks and opens into a shrub meadow before a series of cascades and waterfalls. Early-season travel can be especially wet.

The steepest final push climbs to the flat Niles Amphitheatre. From the large cairn, follow the switchbacks about 200 m farther to Niles Meadow. The open meadow looks toward Mount Niles and the valley below; use some of the grass in the foreground to give the rocky peaks a sense of scale. Niles Col is another 1.1 km beyond the meadow across a rubble field, and the Mount Niles scramble is farther again. This route ends at the meadow.

There is a distance mismatch: the best GPS-based return figure is 19.8 km, while doubling the saved mapped corridor gives about 17.4 km. The upper alignment is not as clearly mapped as the lower trail, so plan for the longer figure and treat exact mileage as approximate. Dogs are welcome in the backcountry on leash; pick up and pack out waste.
