Parking

Start at Takakkaw Falls Parking Lot at the end of Yoho Valley Road. The lot is popular and often fills early in summer and on weekends. The road is normally open mid-June to mid-October. Vehicles longer than 7 m must reverse through the tight switchbacks; trailers are not permitted.

Safety

The Twin Falls viewpoints are beside exposed cliff edges; stay in marked viewing areas. The Whaleback descent is steep and can be slick when wet. The complete loop depends on a seasonal suspension bridge, so check current trail conditions before starting.

Hiking Whaleback Circuit

The full circuitWhaleback Circuit is the full 20.5 km (12.7 mi) loop from Takakkaw Falls parking in Yoho Valley.

Whaleback Circuit is the full 20.5 km (12.7 mi) loop from Takakkaw Falls parking in Yoho Valley. It links the valley trail and Laughing Falls with Twin Falls, then climbs over the Whaleback and returns through Little Yoho Valley. Parks Canada estimates 7.5 hours and 1,110 m of ascent and descent. This is a long, strenuous day for hikers who want both a major waterfall and high-country ridge walking. A short walk to Takakkaw Falls starts from the same lot if you want a smaller outing.

How the loop runsFollow the Yoho Valley Trail north to Laughing Falls, then turn toward Twin Falls.

Follow the Yoho Valley Trail north to Laughing Falls, then turn toward Twin Falls. Parks Canada recommends hiking the circuit counter-clockwise. From the falls, the route reaches the Twin Falls Creek crossing, climbs onto the Whaleback, and later follows Little Yoho Valley back to the Yoho Valley trail. That return is part of this circuit; the nearby Iceline is a separate route. The seasonal suspension bridge is essential to closing the loop, so check the trail report before you set out.

The approach moves between forest and open patches, with occasional views toward the Yoho River. Laughing Falls is the first backcountry campground on this line. The climb to Twin Falls follows the creek and steepens above the campground. The paired falls can be seen from below and from viewpoints above the drop. Keep to marked viewing areas and give the cliff edge room; the exposure here deserves more care than a quick photo stop.

After the upper falls, the route crosses the seasonal bridge and leaves the valley trail for the Whaleback. The path alternates between forest and open alpine stretches, where the ridge gives broad views across the surrounding mountains. The descent toward Little Yoho Valley is steep and switchbacked; it can be slick after rain. The route then drops into the valley and reconnects with the approach near Laughing Falls before retracing the lower Yoho Valley trail to the parking lot.

A historic stopThe Twin Falls Tea House is a landmark beside the falls and a National Historic Site.

The Twin Falls Tea House is a landmark beside the falls and a National Historic Site. It began as a Canadian Pacific Railway log cabin in the early 1900s, built as a welcome stop for people travelling into the backcountry. Treat it as a historic building rather than a guaranteed meal stop, and carry what you need for the full day.

The distance, 1,110 m of climbing and descending, and steep sections make this a hard full-day hike, not a casual waterfall walk. Allow the full Parks Canada estimate and time for viewpoints. The road and bridge both have seasonal access; confirm both are open before planning the complete circuit. Waterfall edges and the wet, steep Whaleback descent are the main hazards.
