Parking

Start at Takakkaw Falls Parking Lot at the end of Yoho Valley Road. The popular lot can fill early on summer weekends. The road has tight switchbacks; trailers are prohibited and vehicles longer than 7 m must reverse through the sharpest turns.

Safety

The seasonal Whaleback bridge over Twin Falls Creek is essential to this loop; verify it is installed. Expect steep, loose descents, exposed waterfall edges, unbridged meltwater streams and snow that can obscure the high route. This is black and grizzly bear country; carry bear spray and make noise. Dogs must remain leashed.

Hiking Yoho Valley Circuit

The complete circuitYoho Valley Circuit is a demanding, informal 17.7-mile (28.

Yoho Valley Circuit is a demanding, informal 17.7-mile (28.5-kilometre) loop joining public Yoho Valley, Twin Falls, Whaleback, Little Yoho and Iceline routes. From Takakkaw Falls it heads north to Laughing Falls and Twin Falls, climbs over Whaleback to Stanley Mitchell Hut in Little Yoho, then follows the Iceline back to the start. This is a linked route, not one signed Parks Canada trail. Allow about 10.5 hours; route descriptions range from 9 to 12.5 hours and report roughly 1,395 metres (4,577 feet) of total climbing. The distance describes the complete loop. It suits hikers comfortable with a very long day, steep climbs and exposed alpine travel.

Up the Yoho ValleyThe opening trail is packed gravel with only modest gain.

The opening trail is packed gravel with only modest gain. It moves between forest and open river outwash, with occasional views of the Yoho River. Laughing Falls comes after roughly 4.3 kilometres; from there the route continues uphill toward the Twin Falls campground, chalet and waterfall. This valley section is easier than what follows, so keep enough time and energy for the long climb and high traverse. Twin Falls is a pair of tall drops: use established viewpoints and keep back from the exposed edges.

Across WhalebackThe route climbs out of the Twin Falls area on steep, persistent switchbacks through sparse…

The route climbs out of the Twin Falls area on steep, persistent switchbacks through sparse trees and loose scree. The Whaleback crest opens onto a broad ridge with views back toward the valley and across to the Iceline. Twin Falls Creek is crossed by the seasonal Whaleback bridge, an essential connection for this complete loop; check that it is installed before planning the circuit. Beyond it, the trail descends on loose, steep ground through open forest and meadow into Little Yoho. The creek crossing and descent can be slow, especially when wet.

Little Yoho and the IcelineThe path passes Stanley Mitchell Hut beside the Little Yoho River.

The path passes Stanley Mitchell Hut beside the Little Yoho River. Built in 1940 for the Alpine Club of Canada, the historic hut has reserved overnight bunks; it is not a guaranteed day-hiker service stop. From here the route climbs above treeline to the rocky Iceline. The upper traverse crosses glacial moraine and open alpine slopes, with turquoise tarns, meltwater streams and wide views toward the Wapta Icefield, the President peaks and the falls below. This is the circuit’s signature view, but the stony route is exposed and snow can hide the tread. Several meltwater streams are unbridged; water levels vary, so do not assume a safe crossing.

Descent and planningThe return drops from the Iceline by gravel slopes and steep switchbacks into forest, then…

The return drops from the Iceline by gravel slopes and steep switchbacks into forest, then follows the valley back to the parking lot. Snow and faint tread can make route-finding difficult early in the season. Yoho Valley Road is normally open only from mid-June to mid-October, with tight, narrow switchbacks; trailers are prohibited and vehicles longer than 7 metres must reverse through the sharpest turns. The Takakkaw Falls lot fills early on summer weekends. Black and grizzly bears live here; carry bear spray and make noise. Dogs are allowed on leash. For a shorter day, the separate Iceline via Little Yoho loop (20.3 kilometres) or Whaleback loop (20.5 kilometres) avoids combining the full circuit, though both are substantial hikes.
