Getting there

Parks Canada describes this stretch of Yoho Valley Trail as an easy, packed-gravel path with minor elevation gain, following the river from Takakkaw Falls parking. The lot is at the end of Yoho Valley Road, 17 km northeast of Field. The road normally opens from mid-June through mid-October. Its tight switchbacks require vehicles over 7 m to reverse around bends, and trailers aren’t permitted.

More about Angel’s Staircase Falls Viewpoint

A good detour on the valley walkAngel’s Staircase Falls Viewpoint is a signed spur off the Yoho Valley Trail, where you look…

Angel’s Staircase Falls Viewpoint is a signed spur off the Yoho Valley Trail, where you look across the Yoho River at a long, stepped cascade on a wooded slope. It suits waterfall fans, especially if you’re already walking the valley; this isn’t a roadside stop. The viewpoint spur is about 2.4 km along the trail from Takakkaw Falls parking, so the walk in and back is the main commitment. A second short spur nearby leads to Point Lace Falls if you want two waterfalls on the same outing.

Catch the falls while the stream is runningThe water breaks into several drops over an exposed rock face.

The water breaks into several drops over an exposed rock face. From the forested riverbank, trees hide the lower end of the cascade, and the river keeps you at a distance. The stream depends on lingering snow patches and can dwindle or dry by late August. If flowing water is the reason for your walk, earlier in summer is the safer bet.

For a photo, keep some of the broad rock slope and conifers around the falls. The water is narrow against the hillside, so a tight crop loses the setting that makes the cascade easier to read.
