Hiking Mt. Hunter Lower Lookout Trail

The lower lookoutMt.

Mt. Hunter Lower Lookout Trail is a steep, 7 km out-and-back climb through open forest to a historic fire lookout on the ridge. It runs 3.5 km each way, gains about 495 m and takes around three hours round trip. This is the lower lookout route; the path continues beyond it to a separate upper lookout. The lower tower is a worthwhile destination if you want a shorter climb, but its view is limited, especially to the east.

The climbThe first few hundred metres are rooty.

The first few hundred metres are rooty. After that, the path climbs steadily up the ridge through open forest, with west-facing views opening as you gain height. At roughly 3.2 km, take the left-hand branch for about 200 m to the lower lookout. Return the same way and allow the full three hours for the steep climb.

Access and the towerParks Canada directs hikers to the Wapta Falls Day-use area on the south side of Highway 1.
