Wapta Falls Trail

The path runs through conifers on compacted tread, with roots and short wooden sections along the way. It starts gently, then drops more noticeably near the river. The outward leg gains about 80 m and drops 115 m, so the return means climbing the steeper descent back to the day-use area. It's family-friendly, but it isn't a flat stroll; take care on the rooted slope, especially when it is wet.

Wapta Falls is the widest waterfall on the Kicking Horse River. The maintained trail reaches the river and marked viewpoints, where you can take in the broad curtain of water from above and nearer the channel. There is no maintained trail to the base of the falls. Stop at the signed route rather than following informal scrambles down the bank. The upper view gives a clearer sense of the whole drop; the closer river view brings you into the spray and the noise.

Start at the Wapta Falls Day-use area on the south side of Highway 1. The access is eastbound only; if you're travelling west, continue 5.5 km to the Beaverfoot exit and return east. The 2 km Wapta Falls Road closes seasonally in winter, adding about 2 km each way to the walk from the winter gate. Check the current road report before setting out. The day-use area has toilets. Dogs are allowed on leash.
