Lembert Dome

Start at Lembert Dome Parking and follow the forest trail to a signed junction. Turn left for the dome; continuing straight heads toward Dog Lake. The direct summit outing is about 3.4 miles round-trip, with roughly 850 feet of climbing and about three hours for the hike. Dog Lake adds distance, and routes differ with the starting lot. The last stretch crosses exposed granite without a marked trail, so choose a safe line and wear shoes with good grip. Stay off domes during thunderstorms.

The summit opens to broad views over Tuolumne Meadows and the surrounding Sierra peaks, including the Cathedral Range. Take time to look across the meadow as well as outward to the ridgelines; Lembert is one of the high country’s most distinctive granite profiles.

Lembert Dome is technically a roche moutonnée, an asymmetrical landform shaped by glacial erosion. Its steep western face and gentler eastern slope preserve the direction glaciers moved through Tuolumne Meadows. From the summit, the smooth rock makes the ice-carved shape easy to read.

Tioga Road is seasonal, usually open from late spring or early summer into fall, depending on snow and conditions. Parking in Tuolumne Meadows is limited, and food, water and other services can be unavailable at the edges of the season, so carry what you need. Dogs are not allowed on park trails. The upper granite is exposed and can feel windy; take care on the descent.
