Guide
This is the National Park Service visitor center just off Tioga Road, on a rise above Tuolumne Meadows’ main parking lot. It pairs a ranger information desk and Yosemite Conservancy bookstore with exhibits on the area’s geology, plants, animals and history. It’s a useful first stop for questions and context before exploring the meadow and nearby trailheads; the meadow itself is the main event.
Exhibits cover local geology, plants, animals and history. One displayed rock sample is Cathedral Peak granodiorite, from a Late Cretaceous intrusion dated about 86–88 million years old. It’s a tangible bit of the Sierra Nevada batholith before you head back outside to the granite domes and peaks around the meadow.
The wood-sided building, with its shingled roof and stone chimney, began as a 1934 Civilian Conservation Corps road-crew camp mess hall and became a visitor center around 1980. A marker outside recounts the CCC’s work in Yosemite: more than 6,000 young men passed through ten park camps, working on structures and miles of trails before the program ended in 1942. The stone steps, rough timber and marker make that history part of the stop itself.
