Before you go

Best time to go

The center operates seasonally in summer, so don't plan on it as a year-round stop. It's about half a mile northeast of the South Entrance. Free, first-come parking includes 16 spaces by the center and 38 more beside the South Campground picnic area, about 250 feet away. Park admission or a valid pass is still required, and the front lot has no shuttle stop. If the lots fill, allow 10 to 20 minutes to walk from the main Visitor Center along the paved, relatively flat Pa'rus Trail. The building has a ramp and accessible parking; the trail may still need wheelchair assistance. Drinking water and bottle filling are available, and the flush restrooms are seasonal.

Zion Nature Center is a seasonal indoor education center between the Zion Canyon Visitor Center and the Human History Museum, beside South Campground. It gives kids an interactive introduction to the canyon through exhibits, crafts, Junior Ranger activities, and ranger programs. I'd add it to a family visit when it's open, especially if you want an indoor change from the outdoor stops.

The exhibits cover Zion's geology, wildlife, habitats, and human history, with animal models and changing hands-on activities. Bird songs and canyon tree frog calls add sounds from the park to the displays. The air-conditioned room is a useful break on a hot day; if exhibits aren't your thing, this is an easy one to skip.
