Parking

Use the Zion Canyon Visitor Center parking area and follow the signs to the trail marker beside Watchman Campground Road.

Safety

The short climb is exposed and unshaded, so summer heat is the main recurring hazard. Stay on established tread and leave archaeological material untouched. The park advises asking at the Visitor Center which archaeological sites are open; current access to this specific site is not confirmed.

Hiking Archeology Trail

The climbArcheology Trail is a short, roughly 0.

Archeology Trail is a short, roughly 0.3-mile out-and-back from the signed access beside Zion Canyon Visitor Center. It climbs a sandy, uneven path to a low rise with a stabilized Ancestral Puebloan food-storage site and a view along Zion Canyon, then returns on the mapped corridor. The grade is brief but sharp, with little shade; allow about half an hour for the walk and a pause at the panel. Published figures range from about 0.3 to 0.4 mile, and some descriptions call the upper walk a loop, so treat the mileage and return shape as approximate.

Excavation identified two storage rooms, three storage cists, two hearths, food-processing tools, and pottery in 11 styles. The shelter was backfilled to protect it, so the visible remains are subtle rather than a standing ruin. More than 1,600 artifacts have been recovered from the site; they belong to a separate museum collection, not to the trail-side remains.

From the rise, look both up and down the canyon and compare the cottonwood-lined river corridor with the drier slopes. The hill sits in Moenave Formation, with layered sandstone and softer bands visible across the canyon. The shuttle facilities are also in view, making this a short historic stop at the park gateway rather than a backcountry walk.

Access and careStart at the trail sign by Watchman Campground Road beside the visitor-center parking area.

Start at the trail sign by Watchman Campground Road beside the visitor-center parking area. The exposed climb can be hot in summer. Stay on established tread and leave artifacts and rubble in place. Pets are not permitted on this trail. The park asks visitors to check at the Visitor Center which archaeological sites are open; confirm this one before heading up.
