Parking

Use the Canaan Downs campsite car park, the road-end access for Moa Park Track. The final 11 km of Canaan Road are unsealed, narrow and winding; allow time for a careful drive. Birds Clearing is a separate access point for the longer through-walk.

Safety

Several side creeks on the descent from Wainui Saddle are unbridged, and the track is rough and rooty. This direct out-and-back stops at Wainui Hut; the separate route beyond it crosses Wainui River.

“Up ahead is Canaan Downs, a small tent campground in a clearing of meadow, scattered rocks and old beech forest. It's a simple base for inland walks and mountain biking, with ten unpowered sites that need booking.”

Hiking Wainui Hut Track

Is this the hut walk you want?Wainui Hut Track is a 7-mile (about 11.

Wainui Hut Track is a 7-mile (about 11.3 km) out-and-back from the Canaan Downs Campsite car park, following Moa Park Track to Wainui Saddle and Wainui Track down to the hut. Allow about 3 to 3½ hours. It suits a moderate day on foot: first you climb to an open saddle, then drop into forest beside the Wainui River before retracing the same ground. I’d choose it for an inland walk with a hut as the destination; there’s no summit finish. This is the direct hut return, not the longer Evans Ridge circuit or the through-route past the hut.

Climb to Wainui SaddleThe walk starts on a farm track that climbs along the forest edge above Canaan Downs farmland.

The walk starts on a farm track that climbs along the forest edge above Canaan Downs farmland. After about 1 km you reach Pages Saddle, where Rameka Track branches left; stay on Moa Park Track. The route keeps climbing through a mix of open ground and forest edge. At about 3 km, broad grassy Wainui Saddle opens up. A nearby lookout faces the Kahurangi peaks. The blackened stumps scattered across the clearing are leftovers from farming more than a century ago.

Down the valley to the hutFrom the saddle, follow Wainui Track down into Wainui Valley.

From the saddle, follow Wainui Track down into Wainui Valley. The descent starts at a moderate grade, then eases on the valley floor. Under beech forest, the track is rough and rooty beside the mossy banks of Wainui River. Several small side creeks are unbridged. Wainui Hut sits in a grassy clearing a short distance from the river.

The hut and the way backThe hut is a four-bunk standard hut, first come first served.

The hut is a four-bunk standard hut, first come first served. Overnight walkers need a hut ticket or backcountry pass; bookings aren’t required. Turn around here for the direct route and climb back to Wainui Saddle before descending to Canaan Downs. Continuing north to Birds Clearing is a different through-walk and involves fording Wainui River. Dogs and other pets aren’t allowed in the national park; certified disability assist dogs are exempt while working.
