Pros & cons
PROS
- Diagonal traverse of Penobscot’s east face with nonstop Jordan Pond views
- Classic Acadia ironwork—rungs plus a wooden staircase—adds fun, secure moves
CONS
- Seasonal closure mid‑March to mid‑August for peregrine nesting
- Hazardous when wet; slick granite plus real exposure raises the stakes
Use the Jordan Pond North Lot just before Jordan Pond House, then walk the boat access to the pond; many hikers take the Spring Trail from near Jordan Pond House to reach Jordan Cliffs.
Cliff exposure with sheer drop-offs, iron rungs/ladders, and narrow ledges. Closed mid-March to mid-August for peregrine nesting. Do not attempt when wet; not suitable for dogs or small children.
What makes this hike special
Jordan Cliffs traverses the dramatic east face of Penobscot Mountain, threading narrow ledges, iron rungs, and a wooden staircase with handrails. You’re looking straight down at Jordan Pond for much of the route, with wider panoramas toward The Bubbles, Pemetic Mountain, Seal Harbor, and the Cranberry Islands. It’s adventurous and scenic—but definitely not for anyone uneasy with heights.
Route options and distance
Most hikers tackle the Jordan Cliffs as part of a loop from the Jordan Pond area—about 5.0 miles round trip and commonly around 3 hours for fit parties. The cliff section itself is roughly 1.4 miles, but plan on connectors like the Spring Trail and Jordan Pond Path to make a complete circuit. Variations can add nearby viewpoints (like South Bubble) or extend the day toward Sargent/Penobscot for a bigger outing.
Terrain, exposure, and skills required
Expect rugged, varied footing: forested tread, granite stairs, rocky slopes, boulder fields, and stretches of cliffside ledge with sheer drops (some sections have hundreds of feet of air to one side). Several short climbs use fixed iron rungs and rails, plus a wooden stair feature, and you’ll often need both hands for safe movement. This is a challenging, technical hike best for experienced, sure-footed hikers—no dogs, and not recommended for small children.
Geology and what to look for
You’re moving across hard Acadian granite sculpted by glaciers, which created the steep cliff bands and boulder fields you traverse today. Keep an eye out over Jordan Pond to spot The Bubbles and Pemetic, and scan the skies for peregrine falcons that nest on nearby cliffs when the area is closed.
Best time to hike
This trail is closed annually for peregrine falcon nesting from mid‑March to mid‑August. Late summer through fall is prime: open access, drier rock, and colorful foliage. Avoid rainy or recently wet conditions—exposed granite here gets slick, and the consequences are serious. Always check current National Park Service alerts before you go.
Logistics and tips
Park at the Jordan Pond North Lot (just before Jordan Pond House), then walk the boat access to the pond to begin your loop. A popular approach is the Spring Trail from near Jordan Pond House to reach Jordan Cliffs. Bring water and snacks; you’ll work for the views. If you want something mellow before or after, the flat Jordan Pond Trail is an easy add to round out the day.
