Trail guide
Andrew Murray Young Path is a 1.3-mile, one-way path from The Notch to Canon Brook Trail, dropping about 250 m (800 ft) between Cadillac and Dorr. It is a rugged connector, not a stand-alone walk from a roadside trailhead. Allow about 1.5 hours for the path itself; reaching it and returning to your car adds connecting trails. The mileage is short, but the footing isn't.
A 4.5-mile network loop starts at the Sieur de Monts parking area, follows Hemlock and Gorge paths to The Notch, descends Young Path, then returns by Canon Brook, Kane and Jesup paths to the Nature Center. That is the longer outing; this trail's 1.3 miles cover only the named path. Both ends are trail junctions, so plan your way back through the connected trail network.
Near The Notch, the trail drops over large rocks and boulders. The grade eases beside a stream, with historic stone paving and steps on the lower stretches. Openings near the high end look toward Great Harbor and the Cranberry Islands. For a photo, frame the islands between the trees rather than filling the picture with sky.
A plaque near the south end marks the path's namesake. After Andrew Murray Young died in 1924, his wife Marie funded a memorial path and a trail-maintenance endowment; the plaque was installed in 1926. The route belongs to Acadia's historic footpath era. Dogs are allowed on this path on a leash no longer than six feet; the nearby Dorr Mountain Ladder Trail is a separate route where pets are prohibited.
