Man O War Brook Trail

Why hike it

Man O’ War Brook is the gentler, shaded connector on the west side of Mount Desert Island that most people use as part of the Acadia Mountain loop. Expect a wide, mostly mellow forest path with stretches of hemlock and white pine, occasional roots and dips, and a short eroded descent near the junctions. If you want a lower‑angle option in a very popular corner of the park, this is it.

Route options and distance

Most hikers experience this as the classic Acadia Mountain + Man O’ War Brook Loop, which is about 2.7 miles total and typically takes around 1.5 hours. If you’d rather skip the steeper summit and just see water, an out‑and‑back to Man O’ War Brook Falls via this corridor is roughly 2.0 miles round trip with minimal elevation gain. Either way, you’ll be on the same easygoing forest tread for a good chunk of the outing.

What you’ll see and feel

This trail trades big viewpoints for quiet woods, cool shade, and the sound of water. Look for mature conifers and granite underfoot—classic Acadia bedrock showing the area’s rugged, glacially shaped character. The waterfall is the natural highlight; it’s best after rain or in spring when flow is up. As part of the loop, expect company; stick to the falls out‑and‑back and go early or late for a calmer experience.

Compared with nearby rocky summits, this is straightforward walking. It’s a great choice for families, newer hikers, or anyone who wants to make the Acadia Mountain circuit more approachable by using the gentler side. Do wear sturdy shoes: the eroded downhill, roots, and slick rock near the brook can catch tired ankles off guard.

Park at the Acadia Mountain Trailhead on ME‑102 by Echo Lake; there are restrooms across the road and seasonal Island Explorer bus service stops nearby. No special permits are needed beyond the park pass. Dogs are allowed on leash.

Best time to hike

Year‑round when conditions allow. Spring and the days after a good rain make the falls shine; fall brings pretty foliage. Summer is pleasant but busy—start early. In winter, expect snow/ice and bring traction if you venture onto the loop’s steeper sections.
