West Ledge Trail

West Ledge Trail is a roughly 1.8-mile out-and-back from Western Mountain Road to the junction with Bernard Mountain Trail on Bernard Mountain’s southwest ridge. The mapped West Ledge corridor is about 0.9 mile each way; this record turns around at the junction, not Bernard’s summit. Published figures are not directly comparable: a 1.1-mile entry leaves its convention unstated, while a 1.6-mile account describes a walk to Bernard summit beyond this endpoint. Use 1.8 miles for the mapped return to the junction. Allow about 1½ to 2 hours for a steady climb, a pause at the ledges and the way back. It is a compact choice for open scenery on Acadia’s quieter west side, with a real climb packed into a short distance.

Forest and bare granite alternate along the southwest ridge. The ledges open west toward Blue Hill Bay; Bernard’s summit is forested and lies beyond the West Ledge junction on a separately named trail. The route climbs roughly 740 feet from the roadside start to the junction, so expect sustained uphill walking and uneven rock rather than an easy stroll. For a photo, keep a strip of granite in the foreground with the bay beyond it; that gives the view a sense of where you are.

Access is on Western Mountain Road near Seal Cove Pond. The nearest roadside pull-off is described as very small—about three cars—and roughly a third of a mile from the road junction, though the precise parking point has not been independently pinned down. Check that you are at the West Ledge access before leaving the car. Bring your own water; no on-route water or trailhead facilities were confirmed. Bare granite and open ledges call for careful footing. Dogs are permitted on most Acadia hiking trails and must stay on a leash no longer than six feet.
