Alpine Memorial is a tall, pointed stone cairn reached by a signed spur in the first kilometre of Hooker Valley Track. Start at White Horse Hill at the end of Hooker Valley Road from Mount Cook Village. The memorial is an early side stop on the 10-kilometre return walk to Hooker Lake, estimated at about three hours; you can visit without completing the whole route. The stretch to the first swing bridge takes about 15 minutes. The path is gravel with some steps, and the memorial spur has no published accessibility details. At the trailhead there is a public shelter, treated drinking water and wheelchair-accessible toilets. Dogs are not permitted on the track.

The front inscription remembers Sydney L. King and Hermitage guides David “Darby” Thomson and Jock Richmond, killed by an avalanche on the Upper Linda Glacier after climbing Aoraki / Mount Cook on 22 February 1914. Smaller plaques fixed to the rough stonework remember other climbers lost in the mountains. In 1914 the Hermitage guides argued for a visible stone cairn as a public tribute, rather than a memorial hut high on the mountain route that only a few climbers would reach.

The Hooker Valley is sacred to Ngāi Tahu, and its Tōpuni status recognizes that significance as a symbolic cloak of protection. The memorial tells one part of the valley’s human story, within a landscape that holds its own cultural meaning.
