Overview
Freda’s Rock is a small, signed heritage stop near the start of the Hooker Valley Track. It marks the spot where pioneering mountaineer Emmeline Freda Du Faur was photographed after becoming the first woman to summit Aoraki/Mount Cook on December 3, 1910. Think of it as a quick, meaningful pause on your way into one of the country’s most popular alpine walks.

The setting is classic valley-floor moraine dotted with glacial erratics, and the rock frames a postcard shot toward Aoraki. Getting There
Start from White Horse Hill, the usual trailhead for the Hooker Valley Track. Walk roughly 200 meters from the car park and look for the “Freda’s Rock” sign; the rock sits about 20 meters down a short side spur.
A Bit of History
Du Faur’s 1910 climb—completed with guides Peter and Alec Graham—was groundbreaking, and her celebratory photo by this boulder turned it into a named place. Over the decades, flood events and vegetation growth subtly changed the ground level around the rock, but signage now marks the spot so you can line up a modern take on the classic image.
Nature Notes
You’re in open alpine country: look for snow tussock, speargrass, big mountain daisies/tikumu, and in season (roughly October–January) the famed Mount Cook buttercup. Kea are reported around the wider area; keep food stowed and enjoy any encounters from a respectful distance.
Current Access and Track Status
As of November 20, 2025, the lower Hooker Valley Track (including the short detour to Freda’s Rock) is open. The track remains closed beyond the second swing bridge while a new 189 m suspension bridge is built, and there may be brief, pre-announced morning closures for aerial pest-control operations. Check DOC alerts before you set out.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning or late afternoon gives softer light toward Aoraki and a cleaner backdrop for photos. The Hooker Valley Track is popular, so expect more walkers through the middle of the day—another reason to stop by on your way out or back when the light is kinder.
Is It Worth It?
If you’re already walking Hooker Valley (you should), this is an easy, meaningful add—two minutes off the main path for a dose of mountaineering history and a classic photo angle. It’s not a standalone destination, but it punches above its size for context and nostalgia.
