Freda’s Rock

Freda’s Rock is a boulder beside the opening stretch of Hooker Valley Track, reached by a signed side path about 200 m from White Horse Hill. It makes a quick pause rather than a separate hike; stop if you like the mountaineering story and a photo with Aoraki behind the rock.

The rock takes its name from Freda Du Faur, who became the first woman to summit Aoraki/Mount Cook on 3 December 1910, with guides Peter and Alec Graham. It marks the place where she was photographed after the climb, making this boulder a small piece of the mountain’s climbing history. The surrounding valley is sacred to Ngāi Tahu and has Tōpuni status, a symbolic cloak of protection that reflects its significance.

This is a photo stop, so frame the boulder with Aoraki behind it. The rock gives the view a foreground and makes a more memorable picture than a mountain-only shot.

Start at White Horse Hill and follow Hooker Valley Track; the turnoff is in the first kilometre. The full track is about 10 km return and takes around three hours, so this is an easy early add-on rather than a destination on its own. White Horse Hill has public toilets, treated drinking water and a shelter with tables; there’s no food service at the rock, so bring what you want to eat. Dogs aren’t allowed on the track, and alpine weather can change quickly.
