This is the easiest high‑value stop near the Delicate Arch trailhead: a short, nearly level out‑and‑back to a preserved homestead and an impressive Ute petroglyph panel. Plan on roughly 0.6 miles total (round trip), with interpretive signs along the way and a wood viewing area at the rock art. If you’re headed to Delicate Arch anyway, this is a no‑brainer add‑on.

Route and what you’ll see

From the Delicate Arch parking area, follow the main path about 0.2 miles to Wolfe Ranch, a historic homestead with interpretive panels. Continue a signed spur for roughly another 0.1 mile to the petroglyphs. The panel—carved by Ute people and depicting horseback riders and bighorn sheep—is easy to admire from the designated viewing platform. The walk is on compacted dirt and gravel, mostly flat, with wide desert views and classic red sandstone around you.

Expectation check

It’s short, popular, and not a solitude hike. There’s little to no shade, and midday light can wash out the carvings. Still, the payoff per minute is excellent: history, culture, and scenery in one tight package, without breaking a sweat.

Tips

  • Best light for the petroglyphs is late afternoon when shadows add contrast.
  • Combine it with the Delicate Arch hike—do this spur first while you’re fresh.
  • Read the signs, stay on the trail, and never touch the rock art.
  • Facilities (restrooms) are at the parking lot; bring sun protection and water.

Best time to hike

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temps. In summer, go early or late to dodge extreme heat. Winter is generally feasible but can be icy or slick after storms.

Pros

  • Late‑afternoon light makes the petroglyphs pop for photos
  • Interpretive signs at both the ranch and the panel add context

Cons

  • Little to no shade; harsh midday light on the panel
  • Often crowded due to proximity to Delicate Arch trailhead

Parking

Park at the Delicate Arch parking lot by Wolfe Ranch; restrooms available.

Caution

Do not touch the petroglyphs; stay on the signed path to protect fragile soil. No shade—heat can be intense. Pets are not allowed on this trail.
