Fiery Furnace Viewpoint

Fiery Furnace Viewpoint looks into a natural maze of narrow sandstone passages and tall walls in Arches National Park. It gives you the broad view of the Fiery Furnace without taking the hike through it. This is a short stop for seeing how the fins crowd together, not a substitute for the maze’s more demanding interior route.

The viewpoint has an auto parking area and a vault or composting toilet. The walk from the lot is short; allow roughly a quarter mile round trip, an estimate rather than an official distance. No official accessibility rating was found.

You can visit the overlook without booking the interior hike. To enter the Fiery Furnace, you need a ranger-led tour ticket or a self-guided permit reserved in advance. The interior route involves uneven sandstone, narrow ledges, loose sand, gaps and tight passages; its many dead ends make navigation part of the challenge.

The sandstone faces can glow orange-red near sunset, when the sun hits them from a low angle. That is the time to linger if the light is working. For a photo, keep some of the clustered fins in the foreground and the distant La Sal Mountains above them; the layers show both the maze and its wider desert setting.

The Fiery Furnace is a labyrinth of narrow canyons cut between towering sandstone walls. Small sand dunes and drainages between the walls support plants and wildlife, so the interior is a place to watch your footing and stay on the marked route. Only one counter-clockwise route has small markers, and GPS reception is unreliable among the high walls. The park’s name explanation is visual: low-angle light can make the sandstone glow like a wood-fired furnace.
