This roadside overlook peers into the Fiery Furnace: a dense maze of narrow sandstone fins, slotlike passages, and hidden arches. It’s the best way to appreciate the area’s complexity without venturing into the permit-only labyrinth below.

Why it’s special

Low sun sets these Entrada Sandstone walls ablaze—exactly why it’s called the Fiery Furnace. From the right spots near the overlook, the glowing red fins line up beautifully with the distant La Sal Mountains for classic photos.

What you’ll see

Expect a tangle of fins, hoodoo-like spires, and deep fissures with light-and-shadow drama. You’re looking across a landscape that’s essentially impenetrable without careful route-finding—part of the allure from above.

Photography notes

Midday light is harsh and contrasty. A few minutes before sunset, reflected light evens things out and the rocks radiate warm color while the La Sals can still catch late sun. Move around the overlook area to align fins with the mountains.

Access and permits

The viewpoint sits off a signed spur road with a short, easy 0.2-mile path to the railing. Beyond the overlook, entry into the Fiery Furnace requires either a ranger‑guided hike or a self‑guided exploration permit reserved in advance.

Facilities and rules

There’s a parking lot and vault toilets, but no water or services. Pets aren’t allowed on trails or overlooks here. The terrain beyond the overlook is fragile and confusing—permits keep both the resource and visitors safe.

Best time to visit

Late afternoon to sunset is the sweet spot for color and balanced light. Arrive a bit early on weekends and peak season to snag parking. If you’re after cooler temps and thinner crowds, come on weekdays and shoulder seasons; save the golden-hour stop for your photo run.
