It’s a simple out-and-back that feels blissfully calm compared to Johnston Canyon nearby.
Length is roughly 1.3 miles total (about 2.1 km) with around 135 m of elevation gain, including the initial 300 m connector along the wide Rockbound Lake trail. The path begins smooth and mellow, then narrows and grows rockier with switchbacks as you approach the falls. The final viewpoint is excellent—but exposed—so keep kids and dogs close and your feet sure.
What you’ll see: dense fir-and-pine forest, occasional peeks into the Bow Valley, and Silverton Falls itself—often described as two to three tiers—plunging through a narrow, photogenic gorge into clear blue-green pools framed by rugged rock walls. It’s a quieter slice of classic Banff scenery, and that solitude is a big part of the charm.
Best time to hike: late spring through early autumn (May–October) for clear trail and strong flow. Summer brings the lushest greens yet still far fewer people than Johnston Canyon. For peace and softer light, aim for early morning or late afternoon. In winter, it can be icy—bring traction if you go.
Tips: wear sturdy shoes with good grip; the last stretch is gravelly and can be slick when wet. Carry bear spray—this is a quieter corridor. Stay on the signed switchbacks (skip the tempting shortcuts) and respect closures—lower cascades are off-limits for reclamation.
