Wonder Pass Trail

Wonder Pass Trail is a one-way backcountry route from Mount Shark to the Lake Magog campground: about 16.5 miles (26.5 km). It follows Bryant Creek, skirts Marvel Lake and crosses Wonder Pass into Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park. This is the full Mount Shark approach, not the shorter viewpoint walk from the campground.

From the Mount Shark trailhead, follow the ski-trail and old road network toward Watridge Lake, cross two bridges and join the Bryant Creek Trail. Continue to the Wonder Pass branch, then climb through forest, larch and open meadows toward the pass. The route traverses open avalanche slopes below Wonder Peak before descending by switchbacks toward Lake Magog.

Allow about 8 hours for the one-way crossing; experienced hikers commonly take roughly 7–10 hours depending on pace, pack and conditions. The route changes elevation by about 700 m and reaches a high point near 2,378 m. Its length, remoteness and alpine terrain make it a strenuous full-day hike.

Marvel Lake is the signature view on the climb toward Wonder Pass, with broad mountain views from the pass. The approach is mostly wooded along the creek, then opens into larch forest and alpine meadows. The finish at Lake Magog brings you into the heart of the Mount Assiniboine backcountry.

This is not a loop. Arrange transportation from the Lake Magog end or plan an overnight stay before you start. Overnight camping or shelter use in the Banff portion requires a Parks Canada backcountry permit; the Lake Magog campground requires a BC Parks camping permit and a peak-season reservation.

The Bryant Creek area is critical grizzly habitat. Current access restrictions require hikers in a tight group of at least four adults, bear spray, and no dogs in the restricted area. Check the current access notice before leaving, since seasonal rules can change.
