Sam Nail Ranch

Sam Nail Ranch is a small early-20th-century homestead on Cottonwood Creek, off Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. The half-mile loop drops through desert scrub to a pocket of shade, with adobe ruins and windmill remains along the way. Allow about 30 minutes. It’s a good change of scene and a glimpse of ranch life; if you expect a restored ranch or a large ruin, set your expectations lower.

The pullout is 3.4 miles south toward Castolon on Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. The trail is rocky dirt with steps at both ends, so it isn’t step-free. There’s a bench under the trees and an interpretive wayside about halfway around. The wayside’s water is non-potable. Parking can fill at busy times, and dogs aren’t allowed on park trails.

Sam Nail built a two-room adobe house here in 1916, and he and his wife raised their family at the ranch. Low house walls, a chicken coop, and planted trees are the main traces. Large pecan and fig trees recall the orchard and garden. The older wooden windmill pumped water for cattle to a tank on Burro Mesa.

At the bottom of the loop, the desert opens into an oasis of pecan, walnut, willow, soapberry, and fig trees. Water reaching the surface draws birds and other wildlife, and a bench lets you pause in the shade. Walk all the way in: frame an adobe wall with a windmill behind it for the clearest view of the ranch; you won’t see those details from the road.
