Red Rock Canyon Route

Red Rock Canyon Route is an unmarked wilderness hike from the park’s southwest access to the Gunnison River, following a creek canyon from a small parking area. The published distance is 3.5 miles each way, 7 miles out and back, with about 1,300 feet of descent to the river and the same climb back. It is a more gradual way down than several other inner-canyon routes, but loose footing, crossings and route-finding still make it a serious day. Allow about five to six hours.

The first mile follows a level double-track from the small lot toward the canyon. After that, the route follows a shallow creek through Red Rock Canyon. It is not marked or maintained, and repeated stream crossings can make the way hard to find; be prepared to navigate for yourself. Poison ivy is common along the lower third and beside the river, sometimes growing shoulder high. The connected map line covers the access and best-mapped canyon corridor at about 3.2 miles one way, shorter than the published figure, so use it as an orientation aid rather than a marked tread.

The route reaches the river beneath high, colorful canyon walls, where campsites become visible upstream and downstream. A broad bend below the walls is the standout view; frame the river curve against the rock. The water is extremely cold and swift, so do not wade or swim. High water can prevent safe river access, especially from mid-May into July.

A wilderness-use permit is required year-round, and the daily limit is eight hikers. From May through October, permits are reserved through Recreation.gov; from November through April, same-day permits are available at the South Rim Visitor Center. Check current instructions before setting out. Reach the small lot on gravel and dirt roads via Bostwick Park Road and Sanburg Access Road; the last quarter-mile is rougher, winter road maintenance is inconsistent, and parking is limited to one vehicle per group. No food service or potable water is documented at the access. Carry ample water: creek water is not safe to drink, and river water needs treatment. Pets are prohibited, and human waste, toilet paper and hygiene items must be packed out.
