More about Governors Head Lookout

Go for the island viewGovernors Head Lookout is a rocky coastal viewpoint on Governors Head, reached from behind…

Governors Head Lookout is a rocky coastal viewpoint on Governors Head, reached from behind Murrays Beach. Bowen Island sits across the water, with Jervis Bay and open sea around it. I’d keep it on the list if you want an island-and-coast view; the payoff takes a 1.1 km walk each way, not a roadside stop.

Walk from the beachFrom Murrays Beach car park, follow the marked grade 2 trail behind the sand for 1.

From Murrays Beach car park, follow the marked grade 2 trail behind the sand for 1.1 km and about 20 minutes one way; return the same way. Murrays Beach itself is about 300 m from the car park, so you can make this a beach-plus-lookout outing. Public toilets are at the car park, and a park pass is required to visit Booderee. At the lookout you can choose to get close to the cliff face, so keep young children close.

Bowen Island and its wildlifeThe lookout has information about Bowen Island and its little penguin colony.

The lookout has information about Bowen Island and its little penguin colony. Penguins live and breed on the island, but this is a shore-based view; visitor landing access wasn’t established. Seabirds, seals, dolphins and whales may also be seen from Governors Head, though sightings are never a sure thing.

Make a longer outing of itThe lookout is one stop on the 5.4 km Munyunga waraga dhugan loop, listed at about 2.

The lookout is one stop on the 5.4 km Munyunga waraga dhugan loop, listed at about 2.5 hours with 14 signs about the park’s plants, animals, culture and history. The name means “white-bellied sea eagle’s home camp” in the Dhurga language of the Wreck Bay Aboriginal people. That’s a richer way to do the area if you want more than the beach and viewpoint.

For a photo, include the island’s dark cliff line with some water in front; the strip of open water makes the island’s shape clear. The classic view is from the lookout, so the 1.1 km walk is part of getting the shot.
