Trail guide
This is a 5.5-mile loop from Garten Woods car park, linking forest paths and tracks around Loch Mallachie and Loch Garten before returning through the woods. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours. The route has about 110 m of ascent, but the effort comes more from the distance and a boggy stretch than from sustained climbing. It is a good choice for a longer, low-level woodland walk rather than an open mountain route.
The start is at Garten Woods car park, opposite where the Boat of Garten road meets the B970. There is no public transport to the start. Parking capacity, fees, toilets and water availability were not established, so check locally before relying on them.
Pass the information board on its right and ignore the left fork marked for the Speyside Way. At the next fork take the right branch; the left branch continues the Red Trail, which the circuit uses on its return. After roughly 1 km, look for a narrow, clear path leaving to the left. It is easy to miss. If you reach a sharp right bend with a path continuing straight ahead, retrace about 100 m to find the turn.
The narrow path undulates through Scots pine to Loch Mallachie. Ignore the path joining from the right, then turn right at the T-junction with the loch on your right. After a bench the path turns sharply away from the shore, later approaching Loch Garten. Expect glimpses through the trees and small side paths toward the water rather than a continuous open shoreline. The pine-fringed Loch Mallachie has an open side with a view toward the Cairngorm foothills.
The path reaches a small car park; cross the tarmac road and take the path running parallel on the far side. The RSPB Loch Garten Nature Centre is an optional detour about 700 m to the right; return to the same path to continue the loop. The route then joins the Speyside Way, crosses the road and follows another parallel path. A small forest lochan has a wooden walkway for a closer look at the water. At the wooden vehicle barrier, turn left into the forest and later right onto the outbound track to return to the car park.
These woods are part of Abernethy Forest. Scots pine plantations are being restored toward more natural woodland by thinning trees and removing old vehicle tracks; on drier ground, look for large ant nests among the pine needles. Red squirrels may be heard or seen. Loch Garten is known for its osprey history: a nesting pair settled here in 1954, marking the species' return to Scotland as a breeding bird. Capercaillie live in the woods, and dragonflies and damselflies may be seen around the small lochan walkway. From 1 April to 15 August, keep dogs on a short lead and on the path to avoid disturbing nesting capercaillie.
