Trail guide
The Capercaillie Trail is an accessible loop through the pine woods behind Boat of Garten Community Hall. The authority lists it as 1 mile (1.8 km); its route map measures about 0.87 mile, so treat the published figures as approximate. The wide, compacted-gravel path is mostly level, with short gentle rises and one moderate slope. There are no steps or barriers. Allow about 45 minutes for an easy circuit with time to pause at the seats.
Start from the community hall car park, follow the tarmac path to the open woodland gate, then pause at the information panels. The route follows the edge of the woods beside the playing field before bending uphill to the former curling pond, now a bike park with a picnic table. From there it turns into the pines, where benches and perch seats give you places to stop. At a later interpretation panel, turn onto the straight return path; a bench and birdfeeders mark the junction before the path reaches the hall.
The trail takes its name from the capercaillie, and one of its panels explains the bird. That is a good reason to slow down and look around, but not a promise of a sighting.
The loop starts and ends at Boat of Garten Community Hall. Its car park has two marked disabled bays, and bus stops are about 150 metres away. The hall has a covered picnic area and wheelchair-accessible toilets when it is open. The path authority notes that conditions can change and may affect accessibility. Dogs are welcome; in woodland where breeding birds may be present, keep them on a short lead or under close control during the breeding season, usually April to August, and follow local signs.
