More about Needles Outpost

Needles Outpost is a private, seasonal campground and general store just outside Canyonlands' Needles District, about 1.5 miles from the visitor center. It is a practical base for camping and park hikes, with the store, gasoline and showers grouped at the gateway. If you are headed into the Needles for several days, it is a useful last service stop; Monticello, where the park points visitors for other services, is roughly 48 miles from the visitor center. For a day trip, think of the outpost as an optional supply stop rather than an attraction.

Sort out supplies before arrivalThe campground is dry, with no hookups.

The campground is dry, with no hookups. The store carries camp dinners and backpacking meals, snacks, cold drinks, ice cream, lunch meats, fresh produce and basic supplies. Regular gasoline is sold when the store is open; there is no diesel. Flush toilets and token-operated showers are available, though shower access follows the store's seasonal schedule. There is no potable water at the campground: buy water while the store is open or fill up at the Needles Visitor Center. Check ahead if fuel, showers or the store are essential to your plan.

Expect a rustic campgroundCheck in at the store, then choose a standard campsite when you arrive.

Check in at the store, then choose a standard campsite when you arrive. The access roads are sandy and bumpy, with tighter turns that can make maneuvering a large RV awkward. Sites are dry camping, so plan for a simple stay rather than a full-service RV park. There is no public transportation out here.

The outpost looks toward the Needles skyline, and campers often single out the sunsets, dark skies and quiet evenings. Evenings can be quiet under the dark sky, but this is an established campground: some sites sit close together, and bathhouse upkeep can vary. Expect a campground setting, not a secluded backcountry site.
