Skiff Hill Overlook sits above the Fort Hill area in Eastham, where short, easy paths thread through fields and woods to big views over the marsh. It pairs naturally with the Red Maple Swamp and Fort Hill trails, making it an effortless add‑on to a one‑hour wander.

From the overlook you get classic Cape Cod scenery—sweeping vistas toward Town Cove, Nauset Inlet, and out to the Atlantic. Benches and an info kiosk make it a linger‑worthy pause rather than a quick drive‑by. Keep an eye out for marsh wildlife; plenty of visitors note abundant flora and fauna in summer.

A Cool Bit of History

Right at Skiff Hill is a hefty glacial boulder long used by Native people as a sharpening stone. Its crescent grooves and pecked depressions are still visible. The stone originally sat in the nearby marsh but was moved about 100 feet upslope to Skiff Hill in September 1965 to save it from erosion.

How to Do It

Most visitors link Skiff Hill with a short loop: stroll the Red Maple Swamp boardwalk, pass the Captain Penniman House area, then climb gently to the overlook before looping back. Expect 45–75 minutes at an easy pace with photo stops.

Logistics

Parking is in small lots around the Fort Hill/Penniman House area; arrive early on weekends. There’s no drinking water at the overlook. Restrooms aren’t at Skiff Hill itself—use the facilities down at Hemenway Landing nearby. Trails are generally easy, but after rain the swamp boardwalk approaches can be wet and the dirt segments puddly.

Best Time to Visit

Mornings are the quietest and nicest for a calm marsh. Fall brings colorful foliage in the swamp and clearer views; early spring is peaceful. Summer is lush but bring bug spray. Late afternoon light warms up the marsh, but parking is tighter then—especially on Fridays and weekends.
