Salt Pond Visitor Center

Salt Pond Visitor Center is Cape Cod National Seashore’s year-round orientation center in Eastham, with a museum, theater, park store and broad views over Salt Pond and Nauset Marsh from the lobby. Make it an early stop: rangers can help you choose where to spend your day, and maps and brochures are available here.

The theater shows Standing Bold, the park orientation film, along with other films on a rotating schedule. Films have open captions and assistive listening. Ask about ranger-guided activities, Junior Ranger and B.A.R.K. Ranger programs; many guided outings begin or take place at the center.

The exhibits cover Wampanoag history and European settlement, then fishing, lifesaving, lighthouses, communications and tourism. A large lobby map puts the Cape’s glacial beginnings and changing coastline in context before you head out to see it.

Look for an actual whaleboat, scrimshaw, a lighthouse Fresnel lens and a Lyle gun. Lifesavers used the gun to shoot a line out to a ship in trouble offshore, helping establish a connection for a rescue. The objects make the Cape’s fishing and shipwreck history feel immediate.

The 1.5-mile Nauset Marsh Trail and Nauset Bicycle Trail are nearby. For a shorter sensory outing, Buttonbush Trail is 0.25 mile and has a guide rope, large-letter and Braille panels, and activities for children. Those features are specific to Buttonbush; don’t assume every nearby path has the same access.

The center is at 50 Nauset Road in Eastham and is open year-round. The America’s National Parks store is a bookstore and gift shop, and public restrooms are available in the center’s parking area. Visitor-center hours and services vary, so check current conditions before planning around a particular film, program or store visit.
