Highland Links

Highland Links is a public nine-hole golf course on the Atlantic-facing bluffs beside Highland Light in North Truro. Go for the coastal setting and old-style links play, not a manicured resort round. The naturally rough ground and wind are part of the challenge; the rough can swallow a wayward shot, so bring a few extra balls.

The course has nine holes, with alternate tee positions for most of them. You can play a second loop for an 18-hole round with different distances and angles. Book a tee time ahead, and check the operator's seasonal calendar before making a special trip.

In golf, “links” describes sandy coastal ridge land. That poor farmland supports native bent and red fescue grasses and firm turf, which suits low shots and bump-and-runs. The wind off the Atlantic rewards keeping the ball down; this is a different game from a sheltered, lush course.

Highland Links began as one of the recreations at the Small family's ocean-and-cottage resort. Willard Small laid it out in 1892–93, and J. Henry McKinley reworked the course in 1913. In 1955, owner Hal Conklin refurbished it and expanded the layout north of Highland Road. The golf course is one of the defining pieces of the Truro Highlands Historic District, alongside Highland Light and Highland House.

The Atlantic and the lighthouse appear from several holes, and golfers single out holes five through seven for the views. Hole seven plays close to the light. If you're already on the course, look for a frame that holds the tower above the green with the ocean behind it.

Tee times are booked in advance, and the course operates seasonally. Confirm current dates and availability before you drive out. Pets aren't allowed on the course. A pro shop serves golfers.
