Overview
This is the mellow, history-forward walk in the Pamet Area Trails—an easy 1.9‑mile out-and-back that explores a former cranberry operation tucked in the glacial Pamet River Valley. Expect a quick payoff without committing your whole day.
Route and highlights
From the small lot by the Environmental Education Center, a short connector brings you to sandy path and light stairs. The main draw is the old cranberry bog and its two‑story bog house, plus remnants of drains, culverts, and sand pits. This whole valley is classic Cape Cod geology—an Ice Age–carved outwash channel that once carried meltwater from inland to both ocean and bay. If you’ve got a little extra gas, add the spur to the Bearberry Hill overlooks (about 0.6 miles each way from the trailhead) for sweeping Atlantic and Pamet Valley vistas.
Difficulty and conditions
The bog out-and-back feels easy: mostly gentle grades with some sandy footing and short stair sections. Surfaces can be soft or overgrown in spots. Around the bog house, mosquitoes can be intense in warm months; ticks are possible anywhere vegetation crowds the path. Bring insect repellent and do a post-hike check.

Best time to hike
Year-round access, but spring and fall are the sweet spots—cooler temps, fewer bugs, softer light for photos. In summer, go early or late for better parking and calmer winds; midday can be bright and exposed on the dunes. Winter is wonderfully quiet if you’re prepared for wind.
Logistics
Park at the end of North Pamet Road by the Environmental Education Center/seasonal hostel; spaces are limited and the lot fills quickly when the hostel is operating. There are no restrooms. Officially, pets are not allowed on the Pamet Area Trails (National Park Service rule).
