Fruita Campground

Overview

Fruita Campground is the park’s lone developed campground, tucked into the green oasis of the Fruita Historic District and rimmed by red rock cliffs. It’s an easy base for the Scenic Drive, Fremont River, petroglyph panels, and short walks that start right from camp.

What Makes It Unique

You’re literally camping in a living history landscape: more than 3,000 fruit trees surround the loops, and when orchards are posted open, you can pick in-season apples, peaches, cherries, and more. The nearby Gifford Homestead adds to the charm with beloved baked goods that often sell out early.

Facilities & Setup

Expect flush restrooms with running water, potable water spigots, and an RV dump/fill station. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring or grill. There are no showers and no typical hookups; generators are restricted to specific times and areas.

Wildlife, Vibe & Night Skies

Mule deer commonly wander through at dawn and dusk, and songbirds love the orchards. Evenings are calm and dark—this is excellent stargazing territory—making late-night skywatching a highlight.

Nearby Sights & Trails

From camp, you’re close to the Fremont River Trail and within minutes of Highway 24’s petroglyph panels. The Scenic Drive heads straight into classic Capitol Reef scenery with spurs into Grand Wash and Capitol Gorge.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and fall bring the best weather and the biggest crowds—reservations are essential. For quieter stays, aim for weekdays and arrive early in the day. Morning and late afternoon light flatter the orchards and canyon walls; nights are perfect for stars when the moon is new.
