If you like your Capitol Reef vistas without the crowds, the Old Wagon Trail Loop delivers. This lollipop loop clocks in around 3.8 miles total with roughly 1,080 feet of elevation gain. It’s a steady, sometimes steep climb right out of the gate, then a scenic loop on Miners Mountain before a relaxed descent back to the car. Expect low traffic, big desert skies, and broad views of the Henry Mountains and the Waterpocket Fold.
Park at the small, signed “Old Wagon Trail Hikers Parking” along Scenic Drive (about 6.5 miles south of the visitor center). The route starts up a rocky, sun-exposed slope and wastes no time gaining elevation. After roughly 1.5 miles you’ll hit the loop junction—take the left fork to hike it clockwise for a smoother flow of views and footing. The tread is natural desert—packed dirt mixed with loose and embedded rock—so sturdy boots help. Signage is only average; cairns do most of the wayfinding, so bring a map or GPS and pay attention at junctions and on slabby sections. The final leg trends gently downhill, an easy glide that lets you soak in the scenery before popping back to the trailhead.
The loop weaves through pinyon–juniper woodland punctuated by chocolate-toned sandstone and mudstone outcrops of the Moenkopi Formation, laid down in the early Triassic. As you climb, turn around often—backward glances frame the Henry Mountains beautifully, and the multicolored layers of the Waterpocket Fold show off from this vantage. Spring adds wildflowers to the palette, and quiet hikers may spot mule deer or bighorn sheep, with raptors like golden eagles and peregrine falcons riding the thermals overhead.
Open year-round, but spring and fall are the sweet spots for temperature and wildflowers. Summer can be brutally hot and fully exposed—start at dawn, bring more water than you think you need, and cover up. Winter can bring cold and occasional snow, but the trail typically remains accessible.
If you’re chasing solitude and geology-forward views, this is an underrated gem. If you want slot canyons or lush riverbanks, look elsewhere in the park.
Small, signed pullout labeled “Old Wagon Trail Hikers Parking” on Scenic Drive, roughly 6.5 miles south of the visitor center; space for about three vehicles.
Hot, fully exposed climb with no water; rocky footing; cairn-based navigation; altitude around 5,000 feet can make the initial sustained ascent feel tougher.
