Overview

Smugglers Cove is a remote, scenic cove on the southeast side of Santa Cruz Island. Think broad, pebbly beach, clear water, and eucalyptus groves with a dose of island history. It’s quieter than the main landing areas and feels wonderfully removed from the mainland.

Getting There

Reaching the cove is part of the reward. You’ll take a boat to Santa Cruz Island, then hike roughly 7.7 miles round trip from the Scorpion area via Smugglers Road. Expect 1,000–1,500 feet of total elevation gain with stout climbs at the start and again on the way out of the cove. Most people spend 3–4 hours on the hike, not counting beach time—plan your pace around your return boat.

Wildlife

Keep an eye out for island foxes nosing around picnic areas and seabirds working the shoreline. Offshore, sightings of dolphins and sea lions are common, and you might spot whales in season—boaters have the best odds.

Amenities & Logistics

There’s a vault toilet at the beach and a couple of picnic tables under the trees. That’s it. There’s no potable water, no food, and limited shade. If you’re arriving by private boat, know there’s no dock or public mooring buoys—you’ll be anchoring offshore. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, snacks, and layers; fog and wind are common and conditions can change quickly.

Best Time to Visit

Start early to climb in cooler temps and give yourself cushion for the return boat. Summer mornings often bring fog that tends to lift by afternoon; the beach usually looks best under midday light, while late-day golden hour lights up the bluffs on your hike back. Weekdays and winter months can be especially quiet; winter can also bring calm, clear days.
