This segment is about 3 miles total, out-and-back from Smugglers Cove to Yellowbanks and back. The tread is primitive and uneven, with brushy and narrow sections and some loose rock; parts of the Yellowbanks section are unmaintained. You’ll first need to reach Smugglers Cove (a separate, longer hike from Scorpion Anchorage), then tack on this coastal add‑on for extra solitude and scenery.

What You’ll See

It’s all about coastal bluffs and panoramic island-and-ocean views. Near Smugglers you move through a historic olive grove planted in the late 1800s, a striking Mediterranean touch amid native chaparral. Wildlife is a real perk: keep an eye out for island foxes, seabirds, and marine life offshore—dolphins and even whales cruise these waters. Both coves have sandy bottoms but also rocks and reefs near shore, which add drama to the setting.

Difficulty and Conditions

Short on paper, strenuous in feel: exposure, wind, and rougher footing make this a tougher add‑on. There are no services and no potable water along the route—come fully self‑reliant.
