Wahkeena Falls is a 242-foot, tiered waterfall in a mossy gorge beside the Historic Columbia River Highway, just west of Multnomah Falls. An accessible overlook gives you a close view without a long hike, while the trail continues steeply into the gorge and hills above. It works as a quick stop for the falls, but if you have time and legs for more, the uphill path leads to wider Columbia River views and connects with other waterfalls and trails.

Follow the water uphillThe falls come in stages, with a tall main drop spilling into a creek over dark rock.

The falls come in stages, with a tall main drop spilling into a creek over dark rock. The lower viewing area is the easy payoff. On Trail 420, an arched stone footbridge sits at the base of the falls. Beyond it, the route climbs in switchbacks toward Lemmons Viewpoint, where the view opens both up and down the river. Fairy Falls and other connecting routes make it possible to turn a brief waterfall visit into a bigger hike. The upper climb is steep, so treat it as a separate outing; the falls and lower overlook make a satisfying short stop on their own.

A bridge with a historyThe arched footbridge dates to 1914 and was designed by K. P.

The arched footbridge dates to 1914 and was designed by K. P. Billner; Historic Highway engineer Samuel Lancaster designed trails here that same year. The name Wahkeena is said to come from a Yakama word for “most beautiful.” From the lower overlook, frame the upper drop together with the stream spilling across the rocks below. A wide view keeps the waterfall's tiers and mossy gorge in the picture instead of reducing it to a white streak.

The parking and picnic area are on the highway's north side; the trailhead and falls are south, so you cross the road to start. The day-use site is free and open year-round from sunrise to sunset. The picnic area has a large shelter with a stone fireplace, accessible tables, fire rings and flush toilets. There is no potable water or food service at the site. Spray keeps the route near the falls wet, and winter ice can make it treacherous.
