Hiking Hardy Falls and Rodney Falls Trail

A short waterfall hikeThis 2.

This 2.52-mile out-and-back from the lower Hamilton Mountain Trailhead follows the main trail to Hardy Falls, Pool of the Winds and Rodney Falls, then returns the same way. It climbs about 600 feet and is rated moderate. This is the standalone falls outing, not the much longer Hamilton Mountain summit hike; allow about two hours so there is time to stop at the viewpoints.

The route and the fallsThe path starts beneath old-growth Douglas fir.

The path starts beneath old-growth Douglas fir. In less than half a mile it passes through a powerline clearing with a view toward Bonneville Dam. At the left-hand Hadley Trail junction, stay straight on Hamilton Mountain Trail. The route gains another couple hundred feet, then eases into a forested traverse with broad footbridges over side creeks. A signed downhill spur reaches two platforms looking down at Hardy Falls, a 90-foot horsetail. That muddy spur can be slippery when wet, so take care on the descent.

Back on the main trail, continue past the smaller creek bridges toward Rodney Falls. The cascade drops in two tiers: about 35 feet to the Pool of the Winds, then another 45 feet below. A short uphill spur reaches the pool beside the first drop, where Hardy Creek squeezes through a narrow rock slot. The slot frames a close view of the water; a rainbow may form in the spray when sunlight lines up. The route then switchbacks to the bridge at the base of Rodney Falls. Turn around there; crossing onward starts the longer Hamilton Mountain ascent.
