Hiking Horsetail, Ponytail, & Triple Falls

Three waterfalls in one walkThis is a 4.

This is a 4.1-mile out-and-back from Horsetail Falls Trailhead, following Horsetail Falls Trail #438 and Oneonta Trail #424 to Triple Falls. The route links the roadside Horsetail Falls, the behind-the-water passage at Ponytail Falls, and the three chutes of Triple Falls. Allow about three hours for the steep climb and waterfall stops. It suits hikers after a full waterfall outing; to shorten the day, walk to Ponytail Falls and turn around there.

The trail starts east of Horsetail Falls and quickly climbs a series of switchbacks. Breaks in the trees give you Columbia River views before the grade eases high above the Gorge. About half a mile in, Ponytail Falls spills over a basalt overhang, and the path cuts through a hollow behind the falling water. Turn back toward the cascade from the alcove for the unusual behind-the-falls view, then keep moving on the narrow tread; cliffs are close in places.

Past Ponytail, the route enters terrain scarred by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire, then descends toward Oneonta Creek. A footbridge crosses the creek; after it, the trail climbs a steeper section above the canyon. Look down for glimpses of Oneonta Creek’s smaller cascades and up for the Gorge opening behind you. At about 2.1 miles the route reaches Triple Falls, a roughly 65-foot cascade split into three channels. Make the falls the turnaround: continuing farther on Oneonta Trail adds miles and changes the hike.
