East Rim Drive is seasonal. It usually opens in summer and early fall, but snow can keep the full road from opening until around mid-July; it closes November 1 or earlier if snowfall arrives. Check the park's current road conditions before planning a visit.

More about Grotto Cove Overlooks

Two viewpoints, one easy stopGrotto Cove Overlooks are a pair of lake-facing pullouts on East Rim Drive, around mile 14.

Grotto Cove Overlooks are a pair of lake-facing pullouts on East Rim Drive, around mile 14.5 and about halfway around the lake from Rim Village. The park map labels them Lower and Upper. If you're already driving the east rim, this is a worthwhile pause: you can look down into the cove from the roadside without adding a separate hike.

Built into the driveThese overlooks are part of a planned sequence developed from 1936 to 1938.

These overlooks are part of a planned sequence developed from 1936 to 1938. Stone guardrails, stone curbs and planted islands were designed to keep the parked cars separate from Rim Drive traffic. That deliberate layout is still part of the stop's character; these feel like small viewpoints built into the road, not informal shoulders.

Look past the rimThe view can reach beyond the rocky, forested rim to Mount Thielsen.

The view can reach beyond the rocky, forested rim to Mount Thielsen. The cove's water color is the detail to watch on a clear day, and dwarf monkeyflowers often carpet the open slopes in July. For a photo, include the rocky foreground and the far peak rather than filling the frame with water alone; the flowers add color when they're out.
